Back Pain

Back pain is a very common complaint. Most people will experience back pain at some point in their life and around 1 in 6 Australians will suffer back pain in any given year.

Our understanding of back pain has progressed enormously in recent years. Changes that might appear on a scan of the back are frequently present in people who do not have any pain, and so therefore may or may not be relevant to an individual's back pain presentation.

We know that back pain is strongly linked with psychosocial factors such as your mood, stress, mental health, insufficient sleep and too little exercise.

We also know that in situations where there is an acute, or recent, injury to the back, that the back is robust and well able to heal itself. This usually translates into a recovery from symptoms in a matter of weeks to a few months, particularly when properly managed initially and when a rehab program has been undertaken.
